Obesity is the most significant super-epidemic threatening humanity. The most concerning aspect about obesity is the fact that most world authorities are hiding their head in the sand and denying it significance while obesity is invading all social classes and has no borders. Although a significant effort has been made to educate the public; providing information on diet, exercise and other avenues to combat obesity. However, many still consider they have no choice but to follow an unhealthy life style and diet; consuming what is available.
Although obesity has afflicted humans since ancient times, the epidemic started to build up gradually since the industrial and information revolution that followed World War II. The number of obese patients having
spiralled up in the last 20 years. This has been due to compound effects mainly by passing what we call the epigenetic factor to our offspring.
Surgical treatment of obesity is the most curative surgery of all kind,
it has been proven to cure a significant number of obesity related medical problems, the list is quite long it includes diabetes, osteoarthritis, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, cancer risk, stroke, sleep
apnoea, fertility, etc.
Despite the increasing amount of bariatric surgery performed, we are not able to keep the overall rate of obesity from going up. The amount of surgery compared to the number patients needing it, is quite disappointing. You might be surprised to know that only about 1% of patients needing treatment are able to access the surgery. Cost, and lack of availability in public hospitals, are important factors.
Active research is our hope of finding better, more practical, less invasive and cheaper options to combat obesity.
